Here we are in the midst of the holiday season, getting ready to launch a new year. This should be a time of joy and peace, but some of us have created a Holiday Monster by heaping on expectation after expectation of what a great holiday looks like.
Stop and consider five ways to regain your sanity at this time of year.
Five Ways to Stay Calm through the Holidays
1. Just breathe.
When you focus on your breathing, your brain is forced to think about only that one task—breathing—and eliminate other stressors. If things start to get out of hand, sit down for a minute and just breathe.
2. Get enough sleep.
Think of your brain like a computer system; if you’ve got too many windows open everything slows down. Sleeping closes those windows so you can wake up alert and ready to face the new day.
3. Limit your caffeine.
Whether it’s coffee or chocolate, caffeine puts you in hyper-drive. You don’t need to be any more hyper than usual at this time of year.
4. Focus on the positive.
When you feel overwhelmed, it’s easy to shift your mind into negative thoughts—all the things you need to do and won’t possibly have time to get to. When this happens, stop and focus on one positive thing in your life.
5. Appreciate. Appreciate. Appreciate.
Although everything may not be perfect in your life, stop to single out the things that are going well. Think about that one person who makes your life worthwhile. The fact that your car started this morning. The fact that you have a purpose in life. Take time to appreciate the great life that you DO have.
