One of my pet peeves is women who represent themselves as professionals, but use headshots that are seven years old, or were taken by a friend in the break room. Pictures that scream AMATEUR!!! Your headshot is the only image that many people have of you or your business, so you owe it to yourself to have a great one.
You know without my telling you if you need a new headshot. If so, bite the bullet and schedule one today. If you consider the number of times you can use it over the next several years, a professional headshot is a real bargain. And while you’re at it, give the business to a woman-owned business.
Five Steps to a Great Headshot
1. Have your makeup and hair professionally done.
This will make a huge difference in the finished product. If you don’t know of someone to do this, ask your photographer in advance.
2. Select the right clothes.
Solid colors are usually your best bet; but don’t think you have to wear boring black or navy. Wear your best color. Bring at least two outfits and different pieces of jewelry to see what works the best.
3. Do your homework.
Think about the kind of pose that best represents your personality and the image you want to portray. Bring magazine pages or photos you like to show your photographer.
4. Drop a few pounds.
No, you don’t have to go on a crash diet. If you’re standing, simply put one foot in front of the other and turn slightly to the side. Now lean forward just a tad. You’ll subtract 5-10 pounds.
To ensure a genuine smile, “smile with your eyes.” Try it in front of a mirror and you’ll see what I mean.
