One of the biggest challenges women business owners have is hiring the right kind of talent to grow their businesses. A lot of factors are involved in making these decisions, but when you’re hiring, keep in mind that there are a few things you cannot teach people.

1. Common sense.
I’m not sure where common sense comes from, but some people have it and some just don’t. If they don’t have it now, they’re not going to have it after ten years of training. Look for common sense when you’re interviewing and don’t hire anyone without it.
2. Confidence.
Another characteristic that you’re either got or not. You might be able to move someone up the confidence scale a bit, but an employee who is timid is not going to change much, adding extra challenges to your business.
3. Experience.
People either walk in the door with experience, or they don’t. While you can give someone the opportunity to earn experience in your business, there is huge value to them having had experience in other businesses. You can’t train for experience.
4. Anything they don’t want to learn.
Some folks are just resistant to new ideas, new technology or new approaches. They want to do it the way it’s always been done. Even if they do finally learn a new system or process, they’ll never become really good at it if they don’t want to learn it.
5. ANYTHING…if they think they know it all.
Whether it’s your teenager, your employee or your spouse…whether it’s a Democrat or a Republican…if someone thinks they know it all, you’ll never be able to bring them around to your way of thinking. So give it a rest.X
